Hey dudes, I'm back. Not that I ever left--I read my friends page every day.
And I need some advice.

I'm going to Japan for a visit soon for 10 days...with the bf. We have a 7-day JR pass. I really really really want to go to a traditional ryokan...preferably with onsen around. But onsen the the bf and I can enjoy together...so options would be a private one (probably too expensive), a mixed rotenburo (outside onsen), or a rentable (is that a word?) rotenburo. Since we have a JR pass, location isn't that big of a factor (to a degree). The most I'd want to spend is around $200 a person.

Does anybody know of any good places? I'm getting pretty worried b/c the rest of the trip plans hinge on this and I'm just not finding anything.

Oh, and other suggestions for travel would be cool too. I spent 4 years living there but never had the time/money to travel.

aspectratioSean's facebook status update about MySpace got me thinking...what happened to my Friendster profile...checked and it's still around. I haven't changed it for four years maybe? I'm still cold and still in a relationship (albeit 2 guys later) but a lot has changed of course. It's nice to go back and read the "testimonials" though...back when they actually were testimonially (I know that's not a word but it should be).

So then that got me thinking more...I have a lot of profiles out there...LJ, facebook, MySpace, Last.fm, flickr, Linkedin, a few forums [Pop Candy, etc.], fake ones for my job [the internet piracy job that is], many email accounts, and probably a few more that I'm just not thinking of right now. [I'm not going to put links up--if you're feeling stalker-y, I'm sure you could find every one.]

As it is, I'm putting this on LJ and facebook...

You know what really bugs me about facebook?  That you can't see most people's profiles.  It's just a façade of privacy though...don't put anything online if you actually want it to be private.  Haven't the many news stories about it taught people anything?  Yeah, but that façade is enough to keep me from looking at most people's profiles...really annoying.  I don't even think I would be on facebook that much anyway if it weren't for it replacing email for some of my friends.

So who else out there still has a friendster profile? Comment with the link!

Saturday morning, far_flungDenise and I met up with our Japanese professor from CCCC for brunch at Tony's Cafe in Plano.  I got the Vegetarian Benedict.  I'd never had Eggs Benedict before, which surprised Scott-sensei, and it was pretty good.  Tomato and avocado instead of ham.

I had almost forgotten how easy it is for vegetarians in the US.  That is, compared to Japan.  It's nice to see the word vegetarian on a menu.  Like last night, Davey and I went to PF Chang's and they had an entire page of vegetarian food even though it's a chain.  And there's this Thai restaurant near Eric that has a vegan buffet one Sunday a month.  We were supposed to go but something got in the way.  But we got dinner there right before he left for Japan--split vegan ham fried rice with pineapple.  Awesome.

Speaking of restaurants, my dad and I took his friend to an Indian restaurant we found out about at The Taste of Garland.  It's called Indian Garden--really nice inside.  I want to try all of their desserts!  I got Orange Kulfi -- Authentic Indian Ice Cream with cashew nuts, pistachio, almonds and flavored with saffron and
cardamom served in frozen orange peel boats.
I want to try Gulab Jamun next time.

I went to Lauren's parent's house on 4/20 for a party.  No, not that kind of a party.  A Salad Party!!!

LDK's dad, sister, her, and her mom

Action shot!  LDK pouring dressing on my [green] salad.  Three kinds of salad!  Green salad, potato salad [vegan], and fruit salad.  Plus Riblets

Fletch turned his back on us!
Maisy, Billy, LDK's mom [her hair isn't actually purple], Fletch, her sister, big fish that hates people and rams the glass when you look at him.

Vegan brownies for dessert.  No, they weren't that kind of brownies.

Bacon, the most hyper-active dog ever, finally lost steam.  He even calmed down enough to sit on my lap.  You can't really tell by those pictures, but he is a pretty big dog with a HUGE head.

I've started using my old keitai to take pictures again.  My newer keitai camera [and mp3 player] are locked because I'm no longer on the network.  I need to get the chip for that as soon as I get some money.

Sunday, Alicia and I went to the Thai New Year Festival in Dallas.  I didn't bring my camera to it because I was worried about it getting wet.  Alicia had a raincoat so she was able to take pictures.

So I'm on Jim Breen's Japanese dictionary site looking up the word loyalty and I notice the word 貞婦, faithful or virtuous woman (wife). That makes me think, how many words are there for that? According to wwwjdic, three: 貞婦, 貞女, 節婦.  But what I'm really thinking is if there's a word for faithful husband/man. And according to the site, no, there isn't. However, this word pops up when I search for faithful husband: 後家を立てる, to remain faithful to the memory of one's husband and never remarry. Now, I'm not saying there is no word for it in the entire Japanese language. But wwwjdic is fairly thorough. And I'm not saying that the words for faithful wife/woman are even in common use today. But even if these words are obsolete, it says something about the society.

Just yesterday, Laura told me about this Japanese actor, Ishida Junichi, who had this to say about his infidelity, 浮気は日本の文化 (Cheating is our [Japan's] culture). After living there for four years, that doesn't surprise me at all. Actually, that was a large part of why I left--I couldn't handle that anymore. Taka cheated on me twice, and less than a month ago, a third time. I've been cheated on by other guys in Japan and I've been the other woman [unintentionally]. I know not everybody in Japan is unfaithful but it really does seem like Ishida described it.

Please feel free to disagree.

Alex and Donna’s wedding on Leap Day was beautiful--the weather was perfect. I’m so happy for them! Donna looked like a model.

Pictures are here: http://hal.exposuremanager.com/g/donna_and_alex
EDIT: The first gallery, Donna's Bridal is private but all the other galleries are public.

This one makes me laugh:

Looks like Denise is taking drugs, I'm wary of everyone, and the guy next to Merrit just had an epiphany.
Denise thinks the guy looks like something else--can't remember what she said though.

Reception was at the Lakewood Theater.  They had photographers take pictures of the guests and print out some of the shots, which was crazy fun.

Here are the ones that they gave us:

I swear I didn’t do anything naughty!

Eric, Denise, and Eli.  I hate how scanned pictures turn out.

I had no idea he was going to take a picture of just me and right up in my face.  I like the print he gave me better than the one on his website.  And I’m not wearing colored contacts.

More shots are here, here, and here.

It was great to see a lot of friends I hadn’t seen since the summer.

March 4th is National Grammar Day!

I have to agree with Martha Brockenbrough -- good grammar is sexy.

Are you smarter than an 11th-grader? Here's a quiz to find out. I scored 7/7 -- I'm a high school hercules! ha

Does anybody know of a good website where I can compare Obama and Clinton? Since I was living in Japan, I didn't pay much attention to the race but now that I'm back, I'd like to vote. But I want to know who I'm voting for.

Jordan and I went out to Dada last night for Dave's birthday. I haven't seen Dave in forever! Saw Shibboleth play Ennio Morricone covers. Strange. After that, we went to Lakewood Landing for some much needed food. Dave's girlfriend, Brandy, got a text while we were there saying we could all come see Be Kind Rewind at around midnight. The guys working there had to do a test run of it. Totally unexpected--free movie in an empty theater for a movie that hadn't even come out yet. Awesome. And the movie was funny. I didn't have high hopes after seeing the trailer but it was good. You could really see the Gondry touch. I thought the ending was really cheesy though.

I've been hearing about the choking game lately in the media.
The earliest choking-game death was reported in the news in 1995.
95--wow, I did that back in 88 at least. Except we did it to try to faint. Did anybody else play that game?

I managed to do a fashion show even though I was getting over the flu! I don't have any real pictures yet but here are a few shots from my or Chanaw's cell phone.

What the collar looked for the runway.

Before I changed into the dress:

Wouldn't it be scary if that were my everyday makeup?!

The designers and models for our line:

I was really surprised at how big the event was--it was at Zepp Osaka and supposedly, 2,000 people came! When we were waiting back backstage, Warai Meshi walked past us! Japanese celebrities! hehe

I was too exhausted for the after party so Chanaw and I went out for Mexican at Hermanos--but you know we did purikura. Don't worry, I didn't walk around Namba w/ that crazy makeup on display--I hid behind sunglasses.

Our makeup had already started to rub off at this point.

I'll post more pictures when I get them--hopefully there will be one of my entire dress. I'll be getting the DVD soon too.

I finally got to meet [info]mellosonic in real life! I've been really busy this week so we only got to hang out for a few hours last night in Namba. And of course we did purikura!!

My shirt was green so the background showed through it kind of--but only the bottom part. Strange.

Evan is a PuriKura Master! I hope he can get back from Tokyo in time to hang out again before he leaves. There's a karaoke booth waiting for us!

I'm sure most of you have seen the news reports on the protests in Burma.  Uchida-san and I joined a campaign for Burma as representatives of our group, The Karenni Rainbow Foundation.  It took place in Umeda on the bridge between JR Osaka and Hanshin Stations.  Some passed out fliers while others [including Uchida-san and me] stood in a line holding signs, and passed a microphone down to speak out on Burma.  I saw at least three news crews [ABC, NHK, and another--I couldn't see their name] and many newspaper reporters.  Of course, the protests were making the news over here but ever since the Japanese journalist Kenji Nagai was murdered, Japan has taken a special interest in it.  A friend of Nagai-san came to the campaign to show his support.  The man is an Iraqi medical student in Osaka who got to know Nagai-san in Jordan.  It was chilling to look at his snapshots of him and Nagai-san.

Here are some pictures I took of the campaign [with my cell phone--my digital camera broke]

The man holding the picture of Aung San Suu Kyi is from Burma.  The man on the end is holding snapshots of Nagai-san.

A monk passing out fliers and people looking at posters.

The man holding the umbrella--his sign had English on the back that said something like, "We are responsible for Mr. Nagai's death."

More pictures are here.

I think it is very important that we do not forget about the atrocities being committed in Burma after the news reports about the protests begin to fade away.  This is not something new.  Every day innocent people are murdered, raped, imprisoned, and forced to flee their homes.  The world failed Burma in 1988 after three thousand protesters were slain.  I pray that we do not fail them again.

What you can do:
US Campaign for Burma
If you live in Japan, sign up for the Karenni Rainbow Foundation mailing list.  We will send you emails about upcoming events such as book fairs and parties that help raise money for Karenni refugees [the Karenni are from the Karenni state in Burma].  Or you could join our group.  We meet once a month in Osaka.

Chanaw is back from Europe!  She brought me a bad tabloid [but what tabloid isn't bad?!] and a HUGE bar of white chocolate.  Lindnt "Swiss Premium Chocolate"

It's bigger than my face!

It kind of looks like a keyboard, which reminds me of this:

Yesterday, as I was walking home from LIFE with my groceries, this 30-something guy pulled his Mercedes over to talk to me.  He asked if I wanted a part-time job.  Said he was a producer and needed extras.  I was pretty sure I knew what he meant by that...haha...yeah, it ended with him saying he would pay me $100 to look at his dick for ten minutes.  He kept on saying that I wouldn't touch it, just look at it.  Umm...yeah dude, I'm going to go somewhere alone with you, a guy I've never met, and "look" at your dick for 10 minutes.
Gotta love Japan.

I tried watching The Oh in Ohio earlier but I couldn't get through it because it was so bad.
That's a shame because I have a huge thing for Parker Posey and I used to follow Paul Rudd.

Chanaw and I got purikura w/ Gloomy Bear today--I'll put up pictures of it later if I remember.

I'm back in Dallas! Got in yesterday after a million-year flight from Seoul.

I want to go to a show! What's going on--anything worth knowing about?

I woke up at 4:30 am. And walked into a spider web outside...and the spider was crawling around on me...
